Builder: Steele Associates Construction
Despite the level site having good access, groundworks presented a challenge. The high water table and unstable soil required grout injected piers to be installed across the site prior to pouring the concrete slab.
To fast-track the construction process, steel fabrication was commenced from datum points provided by Steele Associates to the fabricator prior to commencement of works. We then built exactly to these datum points to ensure a quick efficient installation of the complex steel frame which includes exposed curved structural steel members.
Achieving the zero-tolerance construction demanded by the minimalist, modern design and detailing brought out the best in Steele’s carpentry team which included MBA 4th year apprentice of the year for 2011, Douglas Carey.
The curved tile walls, extensive joinery and detailed stair finishing required vigilance and foresight to execute to the high standard we pride ourselves on. The stainless steel BBQ bench was fabricated in one piece 8m long and fitted round an innovative sleeved structural steel post detail we developed with the engineer. The perforated mesh door underneath conceal an outdoor bar fridge to make entertaining that much more enjoyable.
The numerous exterior finishes including non-standard brickwork, curved metal cladding, sandstone cladding and fibre cement clad garage door were rigorously considered and the junctions between them fastidiously detailed to produce a seamless finish.
Working closely with the architect and our client, who is an interior designer, we worked proactively to stay ahead of the detailing and scope change issues inherent in bespoke residential construction to achieve completion ahead of schedule within 10 months of breaking ground.
